University of Debrecen

With a history of over four and a half centuries, the University of Debrecen is Hungary’s oldest institute of higher education continuously operating in the same town.

As one of the largest educational complexes, it is a player of outstanding significance in the system of Hungarian higher education. The university has education, research and innovation capacities, and can boast of scientific achievements that are significant also in international comparison, on the basis of which it fulfills a major role in implementing the objectives of national strategy. The nearly 30,000 students enrich their knowledge at 13 faculties, 23 doctoral schools, in an institute of considerable professional values. The University of Debrecen, as an intellectual centre having the widest spectrum of education programmes, undertakes a role in the competitive sector, business life, as well as the social and economic life of the local community.

lt maintains an excellent relationship with the city, and is one of the most important engines of the development of Debrecen. ln addition to performing its basic tasks at the highest possible level, the university considers it as its mission to undertake a role in the development of the economy of the North Great Plain region, and to appear as a service provider in the innovation activities of the companies of the region, primarily in the fields of health industry, biotechnology, agriculture, IT, and engineering. 

The continuously changing social and economic environment demands that the institute be flexible, capable of renewal and adjust to expectations. The leadership of the University of Debrecen has set it as an objective to contribute to the education of future generations in cooperation with domestic and international partners, with the highest level of diverse interdisciplinary education and research based on practical experiences.

A few years ago, the University of Debrecen recognised the many opportunities inherent in sports sciences, and has since created the foundations of a high-standard educational, research, development, innovation and service providing unit.

On 1 September 2015, the lnstitute of Sport Science was established, the chief tasks of which include the coordination of sports and related disciplines pursued at the university, the development of degree programmes in sports sciences [bachelor’s, master’s and other postgraduate programmesl, the broadening of domestic and international relationships, the coordination of the sports diagnostics, lifestyle and therapy centre established at the university, as well as the organisation of physical education, leisure and competitive sports at the university. The necessary sports-related and other infrastructure satisfying all needs, as well as the human resources [faculty members, researchersl are all available for this.
