The Hungarian city of Debrecen hosted a two day Supervision Commission Meeting on 23-24 November 2023, as the local organisers provided updates of their continual progress in organisation of the next edition of the European Universities Games 2024 in Debrecen-Miskolc – ahead of the registrations opening scheduled for December 15.

The Commission was lead by EUSA Secretary General Mr Matjaz Pecovnik, Sports Manager Mr Miha Zvan, Education & Development Manager Ms Sara Rozaman, Consultant Ms Natasa Jankovic, Sports Administrator Ms Aleksandra Andreeva, Sports Officer Ms Eszter Gulyas and Media Coordinator Mr Salvatore Sisca

Attending the meeting were the representatives of National Event Management Agency (NRÜ) Ms Bernadett Szentmiklosi, Ms Agota Schnell and Mr David Benedikti.

The delegation of the EUG2024 Organising Committee included Representatives of the Hungarian University Sports Federation (MEFS) led by Secretary General Mr Peter Juhasz, OC Project Manager Dr Szabolcs Biro, Mr Laslo Vegh, Mr Gyorgy Kovacs, Ms Tamara Toth, accompanied by MEFS Board Member and EUSA EC Member Mr Zoltan Rakaczki. The local Debrecen organisers were represented by Ms Katalin Varga, Mr Tibor Poszmet and Eva Gathy, while the Miskolc OC delegation was formed by Ms Reka Molnar, Ms Eva Antal, Mr Istavn Havasi and Mr Tamas Kasa. During their stay EUSA also met with Director of the Sports Science Coordination Institute of Debrecen University Prof. Dr Laszlo Balogh, Hungarian Olympic Committee Member Mr Andras Becksy and Debrecen Finance Director Mr Tamas Dekan.

On thursday November 23, at the Debreceni Egyetem Atlétikai Club football stadium and following a short introduction, the EUG2024 Organising Committee lead by Dr Szabolcs Biro, delivered a status and progress report, updating all present on the progress made in the various organisational fields for the Debrecen-Miskolc edition of the Games.

The report included updates on the organisational structure and the definitive sport programme that will include 17 sports in total: 3×3 Basketball, Badminton, Basketball, Beach Handball, Beach Volleyball, Chess, Football, Futsal, Handball, Judo, Karate, Kickboxing, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Volleyball, Waterpolo.

The infrastructure setting and the medical, accreditation and security operational plans were presented, together with the communication concept and the implementation plan of the marketing strategy. Anticipations about the transportation and accommodation procedures were finally given, along with opening and closing ceremonies scenarios and the programs that will involve all the 1500 volunteers foreseen during the event.

The day of meetings proceeded with inspection visits to the sports venues in the Debrecen University campus, together with representatives from Lounge Ltd. and Sport-Events Ltd., a visit at the EUG2024 stand set up at DExpora exposition in the main university building, then concluded with an official dinner.

On Friday November 24 the Supervision Commission Meeting ended with a wrap-up session in the morning, when EUSA Secretary General Mr Matjaz Pecovnik thanked the local organisers for the hard work and set the next report meetings for the near future, for a successful and memorable event next year.

Debrecen-Miskolc will host the 7th edition of the European Universities Games, from 12-24 July 2024, with more than 4500 athletes expected to compete in the largest university sport event in Hungary since 1965.

Registrations will open on December 15.
